The Snowtown Township was proclaimed on 17th December 1878 by the Governor of South Australia, Sir Thomas Jervois, to perpetuate the name of his private secretary, Thomas Snow.

The town is situated 105.5 metres above sea level with an average rainfall of 389mm and is a prosperous settlement 148 km north of Adelaide.

The district is noted for its high quality wheat, wool, fat lambs and first class stock breeding.
